Overview

Why add Links as assets?
The LibGuides Link Checker Tool provides a frequently updated list of broken links. However, Link Checker only monitors links added as assets. Links added to a guide as Rich Text/HTML content items are invisible to the Link Checker Tool and must be checked manually.

  • While editing your guide, click on the Add / Reorder button icon at the bottom of the box where you want to add the link.
  • Select Link from the dropdown menu that appears.
  • Give the link a name in the Link Name field. This is what users will click on.
  • In the Link URL field, enter the full URL of the page you're linking to (including the http:// or https://).
  • Leave the Window Target field as “Inherit System Setting"
  • The Use Proxy setting should be left at No.
  • If you would like to add a brief description about the link, enter it in the Description field.
  • You can also enter additional details about the link in the More Info field.
  • Choose your preference from the Description Display options.
  • Use the Position option to choose where the new asset should be inserted in the box. (This can be changed later.)
  • Note: You may choose to assign resource icons, thumbnail images, or subject associations for link assets but they are not required.
  • Click the Save button.

Reusing Links

  1. While editing your guide, click on the  Add / Reorder button at the bottom of the box where you want to add the link.
  2. Select Link from the dropdown menu.
  3. In the Add Link window, click on the Reuse Existing Link tab.
  4. In the Search for Link field, start typing in the name of the link you want to add.
  5. Select the link you want to add from the list of results.
  6. By default, a mapping of the original link will be added to your guide. If you would rather create a copy of the original link, select the Copy checkbox.
    • Using a mapping is convenient because any changes made to the original link will automatically be reflected on your guide.
    • The drawback of mapping is that you won't be able to edit the link yourself (except for adding a custom description just for this one mapping).
    • If you need to customize more details of the link, then select the Copy checkbox. This will create a standalone copy of the link that you own and can fully customize.
  7. Use the Position dropdown to select where in the box the new link will be inserted. (Don't worry: you can always reorder this later.)
  8. Click the Save button.
